Jahshua Smith x Stewrat - The Final Season [Album]

The Final Season cover art

A while ago Jahshua Smith, emcee from Detroit, hit me up about his upcoming album, that would become The Final Season. He said,

I’m from Detroit and I’ve known Ryan (Stewrat) for years. He’s been my personal producer for a while now, and this next project is the first time I’ll be able to do a whole LP with solely his production…

And…I never replied because I suck. So, here, after months of no reply I humbly apologize and offer my thoughts. I should have said, “Yo Jahshua, this is FIRE! I’ve heard ‘Ride Tonight’ before and I really dig that track…also, yeah this whole thing is dope.”

(Dose) - So This Is Where We Are [Album]

Jeremy Rike, a.k.a. Dose, a.k.a. slick sampler/electronic producer with a flair for extracting light, emotive snippets, has just dropped his newest album So This Is Where We Are. It’s a question we’ve all asked before: usually when it seems like everything is falling down around us: “So, this is where we are?” For me, the album seems to traverse the psyche of someone asking that question, contemplating it, chewing on it—either numb or free or wondering. “Harder” has a dense backdrop, one with middling synths and howling vocals. It’s a hauntingly dreamy track. “Feel As Good As This” is a blissful, carefree song with a creepy edge (its ghostly falsetto) and one I’ve been playing nonstop. Snag this one folks—it’s some emotive electronic music with an affection for hip-hop. Yup.

StewRat - Comfort [Album]

“Love, Live, Life, Proceed, Progress,” describes StewRat’s Comfort as perfectly as possible. It’s also the first sample on “LLLPP” and the thematic arc for the project. The album’s fifteen tracks are minimalistically titled beats, (i.e., “Cash”, “Honey”, “News”,) that are reminiscent of some found shopping list. Boom bap lovers and hip-hop heads will enjoy this release.

M▲GGZ™ - Day Dream [Mix]

Maggz has a ‘z’ in his name because he’s edgy—an extra ‘g’ to avoid confusing his producing ability with tabloid magazines or bullet slang. He’s his own trademark. And, Day Dream is its own sound unlike anything he’s done before. The Columbus, Ohio producer earlier this year released a soulful, boom bop beat tape properly titled Soundscapes: Winter Selections because it’s cold. Its icy 808s bang and chilly synths shiver. It’s dope. This mix is more ambient, has more reversed elements, regressing sounds and its percussion moves more cautiously. Ya’ll have to check this 13 minute mix out, because it’s awesome.

Ouisa Hound - The Joy Eclectic [Album]

Many thanks to Flashlight Tag  for hipping me to this Hiram, Ohio producer who creates lush, smoky, vibrant—pretty much anything opposite the word vapid—beats. These tracks are dope.

Ohio’s Dose or (Dose)—but don’t skim what’s in the parenthesis—recently released Moments EP. It’s a slew of Soundcloud releases and airy beats. But, wait! There’s more! For the low, low price of zilch, nada, nothing you can own another dope, fresh, ambient beat—“Future Vision”. It’ll sound good in your living room, your car, but what about headphones? Absolutely! And it’s yours at no cost to you. At no cost to you! Seriously, you’ve gotta have it! Don’t be left in the past, get “Future Vision”!

Mike Braugher - Headphones

Mike Braugher, Oberlin, Ohio kid, put together Auditory EP which sounds almost like a Rhymesayers release. “Headphones” starts smartly with, “My home is between headphones.” It creeps above a Jay Dee beat, until he’s singing, “Listen people, listen, listen to the funky rhymes I’ve been kicking. Feel it in my heart, know it in my brain, I aim to maintain, rehabilitate the game.” From the sounds of “Headphones” and “Reefer Madness” (RJD2’s “Big Game”) he’s already on his way. It’s definitely worth a spin. 8/10
